Drum for Life

Drum for Life is designed for wheelchair bound young men between the ages of 15 and 25. It is the goal of the Center to provide opportunities for these young men to become a productive part of society by learning the arts of making and playing conga drums. They become skilled craftsmen and musicians, and are employable in two arenas: they can repair drums for other musicians, and they can play in any capacity from a jazz trio to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

One String at a Time: String Orchestra Phase One

Teaching guitarOne String at a Time is the children's orchestra, for kids from four to 10 years old. The first group of ten kids will learn to master the guitar. It's the Center's mission to teach them to read music, which will also help them in math. The Center will add children and instruments yearly until there is an orchestra of 40 pieces, built one string at a time.

Learning to play, one guitar at a time.

Minkabelle Fairy
The Fourth Annual "Minkabelle Ball" Father/Daughter Dance

The Center's Father/Daughter Dance was a site to behold. Who had the most fun,
the Daughters, dressed in their pretty ballgowns, or the Daddies?

Daddy with his two daughtersThree girlsDancing coupleDaddys coming downDaddys and daughters and pink tables

We opened up with the "Casper Slide" which the girls did better than the fathers, we had a scrumptious meal catered by Jimmy G's, a wonderful local soul food restaurant on the Westside. We jumped right into our "Soul Train Line" and ended the evening teaching the girls to "Step." In the middle the girls played musical chairs and then it was the Daddies turn to play. Oh, what a site this was! Grown men marching around chairs and competing to the teeth for a place to sit when the music stopped.

Everyone left with a gift bag and balloons. Ms. Foster and Maraela tackled the decorating to make the Center look like a fairy castle.
